Improving your AI visibility

Measurement is only half the job. This section covers the other half: what to actually do once you can see how ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini talk about your brand. The practice has a name — AEO, or Answer Engine Optimisation — and What is AEO? explains how it overlaps with SEO and where it diverges.

It's written for whoever owns the work: a marketer, an SEO lead, a founder doing their own content, or an agency strategist building a client plan. You don't need scan data in front of you to read it, though the advice gets far more specific once you do. The visibility playbook is the core document — tactics ordered by how much they shift results, from earning fresh citations on the platforms AI leans on most, down to slower-compounding work like brand consistency and structured content.

Two things worth setting expectations on. First, this moves in weeks and months, not days; the playbook includes realistic timelines for each tactic so you can judge whether an action worked or simply hasn't landed yet. Second, small prompt sets are noisy — Interpreting your results covers how to separate a genuine shift from ordinary variance before you spend a quarter chasing it.

Frequently asked questions

What is AEO, and is it just SEO with a new name?

AEO — Answer Engine Optimisation — is the practice of getting your brand named inside AI-generated answers, rather than ranked on a page of links. The two are correlated but not identical: plenty of brands rank well on Google and stay invisible in AI answers. What is AEO? sets out the differences signal by signal.

What actually moves AI visibility?

The moves with the most impact are earning fresh citations on the platforms AI cites most in your category, publishing content that matches the language customers use when they ask, and getting included in the third-party comparison posts AI draws on. The visibility playbook ranks these by impact and lists the tactics that don't work.

How long before a change shows up in my scores?

Longer than most people expect. The playbook gives a range per tactic — a new review on a major platform tends to surface sooner than new content on your own domain, and new domains are slower again. Check the affected prompts every couple of weeks rather than daily. See The visibility playbook.

Is a drop in my visibility score a real problem?

Not necessarily. Small week-to-week movement is normal, especially with fewer than about twenty prompts, and an incomplete scan or a prompt edit can produce the same shape. Wait for one more scan before acting, and look for a consistent direction across several. Interpreting your results covers the noise-versus-signal test.

What does SimplyRank do, and what do I still have to do myself?

SimplyRank is the measurement and direction layer: it tells you which prompts you're missing, which sources are influencing the answers, and what to prioritise. Writing the content, pitching the publications and managing your review listings stay with you or your team. How SimplyRank helps with AEO draws the line explicitly.
